Asbestos is a hazardous substance. Every year over 5,000 people die from asbestos related diseases, such as lung cancer. Everyone likely to disturb or damage asbestos containing materials must be aware of the dangers and know what procedures to follow.

This course will help you to understand where asbestos can be found, the risks associated with it and how to reduce the risk of asbestos fibres being released. If you plan to carry out work which will knowingly disturb or damage asbestos, you will require a higher level of training.

This course contains the following modules:

Asbestos – the basics - - In this module you will look at types of asbestos, asbestos containing materials, where you will find asbestos, who is affected and how asbestos can affect you.

Legislation and responsibilities - In this module you will look at health and safety at work, all legislation that underpins working safely with asbestos, asbestos surveys, housing, consultation with employees and RIDDOR.

How to complete a risk assessment - In this module you will look at managing risk, risk assessment, likelihood and severity of risk, likelihood of occurrence, prioritisation, risk control hierarchy and barriers.

Asbestos and risk reduction measures - In this module you will look at friability, Workplace Exposure limits (WEL’s), Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), identifying asbestos, emergency procedures, illness or injury and health surveillance.

This course takes learners approx 2 hours to complete.
